CPI comes in above expectations

CPI was just released! Here's what you need to know:

HEADLINE NUMBERS:

  • CPI for January came in at +6.4% (YoY) above expectations of +6.2%

  • CPI for January came in at +0.5% (MoM), in line with expectations

  • Core CPI for January came in at +5.6% (YoY) above expectations of +5.5%

  • Core CPI for January came in at +0.4% (MoM), in line with expectations

Today's CPI print will be the first report calculated using a new methodology.

The inflation data was based on consumption data from just 1 year, whereas it was previously calculated using 2 years of data.

This print used consumption data from just 2021, whereas 2022’s CPI data was calculated using consumption data from 2019 and 2020.

Next CPI Release:

The next CPI report will be released on March 14th at 8:30 AM ET.

Next FOMC Meeting:

The next FOMC meeting is on March 21st and 22nd, with the rate hike decision being released at 2 p.m. ET on the 22nd.
