This Day in History

On this day in 1971, the NASDAQ exchange began operations as the world's first electronic stock market.

The exchange first started as an over-the-counter (OTC) system of trading. But through the years, it became a more rounded market and added trade and volume reporting. Today, the NASDAQ has over 3,000 stocks listed and is home to names like $AAPL, $AMZN, and $TSLA — just to name a few.

On this day in 2005 Google launched Google Maps — the first web application that allowed consumers to map from point A to point B.

Today, around 155 million people use Google Maps on a monthly basis, with features including Google Earth, Street View, and Google My Business.

On this day in 2021, Tesla disclosed its purchase of $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin ($BTC) to hold on its balance sheet. Tesla originally intended to accept Bitcoin as payment, but Elon Musk famously called it out for its immense energy use. This caused the price to fall from nearly $65k to $35k in the matter of weeks.

Tesla is still holding the majority of its Bitcoin, except for one sale netting a $128 million profit on 10% of their position back on June 13, 2021. As of Feb. 7, Tesla $TSLA said the value of its $BTC holdings as of Dec. 31 was $1.99 billion.
